First grade is off to a great start! A new year brings excitement for learning and growing. The teachers recognize this energy, and each year lead the children in discussions about hopes and dreams, or goals, for the school year. The students shared many goals, including, "I want to read hard books", "I want to make letters better", "I want to do tricky math", and "I want to make new friends." Each student illustrated or wrote about their personal goal for the first part of the year. Conversations followed about how they can help one another achieve those goals. A poster, entitled Classroom Expectations, was created in each room. This document lists positive behaviors that will benefit everyone in reaching their goal. In the spirit of the Responsive Classroom community-building process, each child pledged to do their very best at remembering the expectations and signed the poster to make it official. Each classroom now has their very own display of Hopes & Dreams, along with the expectations poster which is hung in a prominent place allowing for easy review.
