Math Tools

9/26/2019

The number grid, a tool used frequently for math games, was introduced to first graders this week.   The introduction of this math tool followed the use of a number line for math games.  The grid goes from -9 to 110.  The children have been using this tool to learn to count up and back from large numbers. They have played the game “Rolling to 50” to train their eyes to go down a row and to the left to continue with counts. They will be using this tool, which is located both in the back inside cover of their math book, on their name tag, and on their homework folder, throughout the year to solve problems and play games.

Thank you to all parents who attended Back to School Night!

Hopes and Dreams in First Grade

First grade is off to a great start! A new year brings excitement for learning and growing. The teachers recognize this energy, and each year lead the children in discussions about hopes and dreams, or goals, for the school year.  The students shared many goals, including, "I want to read hard books", "I want to make letters better", "I want to do tricky math", and "I want to make new friends."  Each student illustrated or wrote about their personal goal for the first part of the year. Conversations followed about how they can help one another achieve those goals.  A poster, entitled Classroom Expectations, was created in each room. This document lists positive behaviors that will benefit everyone in reaching their goal.  In the spirit of the Responsive Classroom community-building process, each child pledged to do their very best at remembering the expectations and signed the poster to make it official.  Each classroom now has their very own display of Hopes & Dreams, along with the expectations poster which is hung in a prominent place allowing for easy review.

Sharing Writing Folder Photos

The first-grade students were very busy this week creating personal photo collages for their writing workshop folders.   Children carefully laid out photos on their folders and then glued them into place. The folders now serve as a reminder about how many stories each child has to write about! Conversations were flowing as the children told each other about events depicted in their pictures. Many children added drawings alongside the photographs to add even more memories. It was heartwarming to hear so many children discussing the people in the photos that made their memories special.  The rooms were abuzz with conversations about cousins, siblings, and friends. The children are excited for parents to see their collages at Back to School Night!  The teachers thank the parents for providing their children with the photos that helped kick-off this important beginning project for writing workshop!
