This week, first graders explored math manipulatives like Geoboards, Place Value Blocks, and Pattern Blocks. There were many impressive creations! They made structures, created designs, and constructed shapes while discovering how shapes are alike and different. First graders examined how to make triangles, rectangles, and squares. We connected this to our unit about counting by asking questions like, “How many ones cubes could you use to make a triangle?” and “What designs can you make with ten different pattern blocks?” Children used their knowledge of math to analyze how the materials were helpful for things like counting and looking at shapes, while also familiarizing themselves with math tools available in the classroom.
