This week the first graders rotated through math centers as they explored several activities. The children saw a large group of pennies and made a group estimate. They then counted to see how close they came to the actual amount. Each group counted in a different way to check other’s work. They also measured and arranged objects from shortest to longest. They used words to explain how they arrived at their conclusions. The children also played high roller, where they practiced counting up as an addition strategy. Finally, the children found doubles in nature and practiced those addition facts. These hands on experiences help cement mathematical concepts and offer opportunities to use words to explain their thinking. In addition, these activities are fun!
