The first graders worked as a team to create a mural depicting Fosterfields Historical Farm, which they visited last week. Each class was responsible for creating a building. Everyone worked on animals, fields, trees and fences. The details they included were evidence of how much they learned on the trip. Please stop by the first grade hallway to see their magnum opus!
First grade learned about early 20th century farm living while visiting Fosterfields Historical Living Farm in Morristown on Wednesday. The docents were dressed in period clothing and told many stories to the children about the former owners of the farm. Meeting farm animals such as Jersey cows, draft horses, pigs, and chickens was definitely a highlight of the day! The children experienced firsthand some of the chores of the time period such as corn cracking, butter churning, and washing and drying laundry, and cleaning a horse harness with sheep wool. It was a wonderful day filled with beautiful weather and colorful autumn scenery.
This week in first grade, the first grade students have been working hard on their small moments story in Writer’s Workshop. They have learned how to write a story by first choosing a topic, planning out their stories and then writing down their thoughts. These first stories are real stories, taken from their personal experiences. They are inspired by topics such as family trips, a favorite birthday present or even a new family pet. The first grade author’s have learned to incorporate important details into their stories including, where the story takes place, who are the people in the story, what was happening in the story, and when does the story take place. Our author’s are thrilled to share their masterpieces with their parents at our first author’s celebration.
