1S performed their play today, based on the book, The Snatchabook by Helen Docherty.  This is a story about the value of bedtime stories.  The children worked incredibly hard to do their best acting, singing, and moving around the stage to tell the story of woodland creatures who love books. When their books begin to mysteriously disappear they find themselves with a mystery to solve.  Who is taking all the books? The reviews from their fellow first graders included, "Love the costumes!", "We could hear all your words!", "The songs are great!", and "I love the set."   This is definitely a talented bunch of students.

Reminder: Field Trip on Monday.  Children are to wear white MKA shirts, jeans are allowed.  Please use your judgment for footwear, (sneakers or boots if it is muddy).

First Grade is the Best!

Do you like to read, write and do math? If so, first grade is for you!  We think first grade is the best! In first grade you have time to read every day! You have 2 recesses to play with your friends. I remember when I was in first grade we heard the best read aloud stories!  Come and visit! You will see first grade is the best.

This is a sample of persuasive writing the first graders are currently engaged in. They begin with a hook to grab the reader’s attention. The authors clearly state their opinions, provide reasons to support their position and include a small moment piece to add to their persuasive talents. Finally, the children have learned to use a wrap up sentence to end their position paper.

First grade had a wonderful time celebrating Valentine’s Day yesterday!  Each friend made a festive valentine collections bag.  We read books, learned about the history of Valentine’s Day and felt the spirit of kindness and giving.  At our parties, each first grader had a chance to deliver their valentines to each of their friends.  Their was an explosion of love, happiness and fun as the children read their valentines and ate delicious treats.  A big thank you to all of the parents who provided snacks, drinks, and supplies for our parties.  It was a great time had by all!

First Graders Have Opinions Too!

This week we began a writing unit on opinion writing. The introduction to our new unit started with a discussion about the power and purposes of writing.   We talked a lot about defending opinions with reasons and inlcuding supporting details for those reasons.   A list was brainstormed about the kinds of things that people review.  Some of the things the children came up with are restaurants, movies, iPad apps, toys, and books.

First graders are natural collectors so the lessons this week focused on judging collections and what merits a fair judgment.  We talked about why language such as “I like it because…” , is more convincing than, "I just like it”.  We will move through opinion writing with a focus on explaining judgments, how to convince a reader about an opinion, and realizing that writers don’t always share the same opinion and how to write a counter argument with grace.
