First grade kicked off a year-long study of food with a visit to the Primary School’s kitchen. Prior to their visit, each class brainstormed a list of what they would like to know about the kitchen and the food served at MKA. The children took turns asking questions during their visit. Belinda DiGiambattista, the owner of MKA’s food service, Butter Beans, answered questions such as: “Where does the food come from?”, “How does the food get to MKA?”, “Who decides on the menu?” and “How does the truck driver know what to bring to our school?” The children were then invited into the kitchen to look at the extra-large refrigerator and the closet that serves as a pantry. The staff members spoke with the children about their responsibilities. The children learned a lot, most importantly that there are many steps taken and many people involved in order for the food to become available for them to enjoy.
REMINDER: Monday is the first grade writing celebration! Parents begin in the library with Donna Carrara at 8:15.
