First graders began a new unit in reading called, A Study of Story Elements. The unit began with a discussion about how books can introduce the reader to a character who is going places and doing things, and how the reader can go along too! Children were reminded of the strategies they already know and to use those strategies to keep up with a story. While choosing new books for their reading bin this week, children were asked to think carefully about how to preview a book, focusing on the questions "Where are the characters going?" and "What are they doing?" They were taught how to mark important parts in a story with Post-its for sharing later with a partner. The students practiced making predictions and what might happen, imagining what's next for the characters. This unit urges our young readers to dig a little deeper and track events of the story as they read on, all critical for increasing comprehension.
